Web hosting, data center and colocation
service providers as a whole are generally not
the groups that instantly come to mind as
Green organizations. With computer hardware and
power density increasing on an almost quarterly
basis, datacenters stick out as some of the
largest power users in the country.
That doesn’t mean that every little bit of
saving doesn’t help! If just 10% of
businesses nationwide made just basic efforts to
conserve energy & cut down on waste, it would
have a tremendous impact on our nation as a
whole.
To that end, dotCOM host is making changes in
2008 to become a more Green operation.
These changes include but are not limited to:
Using only certified Energy Efficient CPUs and
power supplies in all servers (process
started in the fall of 2006) to minimize
power consumption and heat generation
Using high efficiency AC cooling systems
to minimize impact on the environment
Beginning a company-wide Recycling
Program
Installing Motion Sensitive Lighting in
non-critical areas
Requesting minimum shipping materials
from frequently used vendors
Exploring more efficient data center
cooling systems for overall energy savings
These initial steps already make an impact. It
is our intention to continue these efforts to
find cleaner, more energy efficient, and less
wasteful methods of conducting business. We urge
all companies and individuals to do the same.
